There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a glass of Homemade POG Juice- a tropical blend of passionfruit, orange and guava juice that transports you straight to the beaches of Hawaii. This Hawaiian POG tropical juice recipe is a perfect balance of tart, sweet, and fruity flavors, making it an ideal drink for summer, brunch, or any time you crave a tropical escape. This iconic drink has become a must-try tropical delight, originally made famous by Meadow Gold and found at Disney World locations like Animal Kingdom Lodge, Polynesian Resort, and ‘Ohana Restaurant.

The Chemistry of POG

Creating homemade POG juice is all about achieving the right balance of acidity, sweetness, and body. Passion fruit is naturally tart, oranges provide sweetness and brightness, and guava contributes a thicker texture with a tropical aroma. The trick is adjusting the ratios to prevent the juice from being too sweet, too tangy, or too watery.

A typical POG juice recipe calls for equal parts of passionfruit, orange, and guava juice, but adjusting these ratios can help you achieve the best flavor. If you love a more citrus-forward drink, increase the orange juice. Add more guava nectar if you want a tropical delight that’s less tart.

Ingredients for POG Juice

Water & Granulated Sugar

Create a simple syrup that adds sweetness and modifies the freezing temperature of the juices.

Passion Fruit, Guava & Orange Juice

Combined to form the classic POG flavor, each contributing its unique tropical taste.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan combine the 1/2 water and 1/2 sugar. Turn the heat to medium high and whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  2. Turn the heat up to high and allow the mixture to get to a boil. Then boil until it reduces by half. This take about 5-10 minutes boiling time.
  3. Once the sugar mixture is done, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool a bit as you mix the rest of the drink.
  4. In a large pitcher, mix the 3 juices: 4 cups passion fruit juice, 4 cups guava juice, and 3 cups orange juice. Stir to combine.
  5. Add in the sugar mixture and stir again.
  6. Enjoy!

How to Find Passion Fruit Juice

Finding fresh passion fruit is one challenge many face when making passion fruit-orange-guava juice at home. Since it’s not always available at the grocery store, you can substitute it with pure passion fruit juice, frozen pulp, or a tropical juice blend. Just keep in mind that if you use a blend, it will alter the flavor. Additionally, some store-bought juices may be more tart than expected, so adjusting the sweetness with honey or simple syrup can help balance the flavors.

Preventing Juice Seperation

Separation is another natural occurrence when making homemade tropical fruit juice since no preservatives exist. Simply stir before serving.

Another common issue is consistency- some juices are naturally thin, while others are thicker. If your juice is too watery, adding more guava nectar can help create the right texture, while straining fresh juice can make it smoother.

Getting that Exact Flavor

If your homemade version doesn’t taste exactly like the POG juice you’ve had in Hawaii or Disney Resorts, this could be due to variations in juice brands and fruit ripeness. The best way to get the authentic Hawaiian taste is to use the highest quality juices (I love the Ceres brand) and experiment with your ratios until you find the perfect balance.
