Looking to upgrade your Sunday morning routine or impress overnight guests with something extra special? This Butter Caramel Sourdough French Toast is your perfect breakfast answer.

This one earns a spot right next to your other gourmet French toast recipes. It hits all the boxes: it’s a Brioche French toast with caramel magic and caramel pecan topping that elevates your average French toast bake into an unforgettable brunch moment. The custard-soaked French toast base delivers a creamy interior, while the pecan caramel drizzle makes for a bakery-worthy bite.
The Chemistry of Butter Caramel Pecan French Toast
The success of French toast starts with your egg mixture. You want to combine eggs with whole milk (or heavy cream if you’re feeling bold) to create that custardy soak. Bread absorbs this mixture through its porous texture, but the right thickness and soaking time might help avoid sogginess. Then there’s the caramel: a balance of brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream, cooked over medium heat, creates a velvety sauce. Add cup pecans at the end to preserve their crunch and earthy flavor. Cook your toast at medium heat until golden brown, which gives the custard time to cook through without drying it out.

Recipe Troubleshooting
Dry and flavorless or falling apart? Soaking the bread too long can leave the bread soggy and falling apart, while not soaking it long enough can leave it dry. Use thick (1-inch) slices of bread and dip them just long enough to absorb, but not so long that they collapse.
Cooking unevenly? Always spray the fry pan with cooking spray or butter, then let it preheat.
Can you use sourdough brioche? Totally! It adds a slight tang that pairs beautifully with the caramel.
What’s the best way to cook the caramel? Use a small saucepan over medium-low heat and stir constantly to avoid burning.
Too sweet or overly rich? I suggest serving it with bacon or maple sausage to cut through the sugar.
Pecans lost their crunch? You may have cooked them in the sauce for too long.

Serving Suggestions
Serve warm with extra caramel sauce at the table for drama. Add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for next-level indulgence. Garnish with powdered sugar or flaky sea salt for a sweet-salty contrast. Pair with crispy bacon, an egg sandwich, or maple sausage to balance out the sugar. For freshness, serve with sliced bananas and poached pears. Plate on a rustic wooden board or stack slices high to wow guests. Don’t forget a mug of coffee, chai, eggnog, sparkling cider, or drinking chocolate to sip with it.
Seasonal Serving Suggestions
Planning your Christmas morning French toast or looking for a decadent winter sourdough recipe? This one ticks the boxes. With its warm, sweet notes, it feels right at home on the Thanksgiving breakfast table or alongside other homemade caramel sauce recipes. If you’re building a cozy weekend breakfast spread or love creating sweet pecan brunch dishes, this brunch recipe should absolutely make your list.
Baking Tips
Think fluffy brioche slices dipped in a rich custard, fried to golden-brown perfection, and topped with a buttery caramel sauce with pecans that’s so good it should probably come with a warning label. Whether you’re hosting a holiday morning brunch or just craving something sweet, this French toast recipe has “family favorite” written all over it.

Storage Tips
Keep leftover French toast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on a rimmed baking sheet in a 350°F oven to revive that crispy edge. Store the caramel sauce separately in a small bowl wrapped in plastic wrap.
Freezer- Freeze cooled French toast slices in a single layer with parchment between them. Use freezer-safe containers or bags. Thaw overnight and reheat in the oven or toaster oven until warm. Freeze the caramel sauce in a small container, then thaw it in the fridge and reheat gently before serving.
Make Ahead- Make the pecan sauce a day or two in advance and store it in the fridge. Toast the bread slices the night before, then keep them loosely wrapped. In the morning, all you need to do is dip, fry, and pour. This saves tons of time for busy holiday mornings or when you have a house full of overnight guests.
